Soumitra’s update: five years after surgery for EGFR+ lung cancer
Soumitra first shared his story with us in 2025. He’s a retired finance professional, and during the pandemic he started getting breathless walking around his housing complex. His GP thought it was acid reflux, and it took a while to find the real cause. He was diagnosed with stage 2 EGFR+ lung cancer in 2021 and had a lobectomy that November.
This Lung Cancer Awareness Month marks five years since his surgery, and his latest scans are clear.
“A lung cancer diagnosis is not the end of the story. With the right care, support and hope, life can move forward.”
He keeps active with walking, yoga and the gym, and he’s been on holiday to places he’d always wanted to see. Next, he’s training to trek in the Peruvian Andes. And in summer 2027, his son is getting married.
Soumitra is now a trustee of EGFR+ Lung Cancer UK and Treasurer of Lung Cancer Europe, and he hopes his story helps other people look ahead.
“Medical advances are opening new possibilities, and no one should have to face this journey alone.”
