From Finance Professional to Cancer Advocate: Soumitra's Journey
Soumitra's shortness of breath was initially treated as acidity before his cancer diagnosis
I'm Soumitra, and I'm a retired finance professional, 68 years old, with over 12 years of experience working in the charity sector. As a Trustee and Treasurer across several NGOs and community organisations in India and the UK, I bring financial stewardship and governance insight to the work I do.
When I received my diagnosis in 2021, it was Stage II EGFR+ lung cancer. I had been experiencing shortness of breath during the COVID period when I was just walking around within my housing complex. My GP thought it was acidity and gave medications for that. It took time before the real cause was discovered.
My current focus is on lung cancer awareness and patient support through EGFR Positive UK, where I volunteer to help improve outcomes for those affected by EGFR-positive lung cancer. Beyond raising awareness, I work to strengthen the operational and strategic foundations of the charity - because behind every campaign or service is a need for sustainability, trust, and good governance.
For me, self-care means slowing down and being present. It's my walks, gym or yoga (I hate it, but I know I need it), a good book, travelling to various countries, a good movie, and staying connected to causes that matter. I've learned to listen to my body, say no when needed, and make time for what brings me peace - without feeling guilty about it.
"Recovery isn't just medicine – it's a mindset. Staying positive, being active, physically and mentally, every day.”
